HungerFREE is
our global campaign that will force governments to deliver on their
commitment to halve world hunger by
2015
What is the
problem?
- Over 1 billion people are hungry in the world right now.
- A further 750 million people are now at risk of falling into
chronic hunger.
- This means that 1.75 billion people, or 25% of the world's
population, now lack basic food security.
- One child dies of hunger related causes every five
seconds.
- 70% of the hungry are female. Women in poor countries grow more
than 60% of the food but own less than 1% of the land. Yet there is
enough food in the world to feed everybody.
What causes
Hunger?
- Hunger is not caused by nature, it’s a political choice!
- Hunger results from the unequal distribution of food, and the
lack of access to and control over resources.
- Climate change is already having a devastating impact on hungry
people - Floods, droughts and other consequences of global warming
are destroying poor people’s lives.
- Global food prices have increased by 83 percent in the last 2
years (wheat has gone up 181 percent)
- Almost half the increase in the consumption of major fuel crops
in 2007 was related to biofuels In 2000 Governments committed to
halving hunger by 2015. Almost ten years have passed. Yet today
hunger is increasing in most parts of the world. Governments can
make a huge difference if they keep their promises. What are we
doing about it?
- HungerFREE is a global campaign that will force governments to
deliver on the first Millenium Development Goal: to halve extreme
poverty and hunger by 2015.
- The ActionAid HungerFREE campaign aims to put the issue of
hunger to the top of the political agenda. The right to food has
been sidelined for too long!
What are we
asking for?
HungerFREE will drive change by pushing governments to:
- Introduce and implement laws that bring an immediate end to all
deaths by starvation and ensure basic social protection
- Enact and enforce laws that guarantee all women the right to
own land. * Ensure that corporations are held accountable for
abuses of the rights to food, water, land and seeds
